2023-04-27 Rogers to join with Musk for satellite service

1) A great idea to be shown the various types of “sensors” installed and used by the city, and to discuss the possible ramifications. A few years ago, Toronto planned on having a section designated as a “smart city”, but concerns about privacy and data collection disrupted the plans and the “smart city” concept died.

Jane’s Walk: A Conversation about Sensors in Public Space

“We’re organizing a Jane’s Walk! Join City of Toronto staff on a walk around the Entertainment District to identify and discuss sensors installed in the public realm, and for a conversation about data collection, digital rights, the “internet of things”, and what it all means for the public good. Staff from Technology Services are leading this walk, and will be supported by staff from the City Clerk’s Office (Privacy Unit) and Transportation Services (Traffic Management). The walk will take approximately 1-hour. No registration is needed.”

When: Saturday, May 6, 2023, 2:00pm
Where: 200 King Street West (north-west corner, King and University)

2) I do hope that people who would like to participate in Cece Doucette’s webinars are on her mailing list. I am but don’t get these notices in time to share in advance of many. This looks as if it would have been a good one.

3) Rogers is expanding its reach into the remote areas where sensitive people currently can escape to recuperate and where wildlife can flourish. No doubt this will mean more satellites and much more microwave radiation.

SpaceX, Rogers to Connect Mobiles Phones to Satellites in Remote Canadian Areas

“Rogers Communications and Elon Musk’s SpaceX plan to connect mobile phones to satellite-based services aiming to expand coverage to remote areas in Canada, the companies said on Wednesday.

The service, which will be delivered via the space company’s Starlink satellite network, will cover 4G and 5G phones starting with SMS text and will eventually expand to voice and data service in Canadian areas without networks.”
