1) Please see below in Letters information from Shelley Wright about the opportunity for public input about free public Wi-Fi in Toronto. This could be a precedent that other cities would want to follow.
You are Invited to Attend, Listen and Provide Feedback – City of Toronto kicks off consultations for expanded free public wi-fi strategy
“Beginning Thursday, May 30, the City of Toronto will hold a series of public consultations to inform an expanded Free Public Wi-Fi Strategy based on considerations including how residents use free public Wi-Fi, which City spaces could benefit from it, steps the City can take to enhance the experience of getting online and ways to monitor quality and identify areas for improvement. In addition to public consultations, the City is working with community organizations across Toronto to facilitate in-depth discussions with people with lived experience in the digital divide.”
2) There is a lot to consider about this article. One, it seems like a good way to ensure weapons, drugs, etc. are not being brought in, and is much more pleasant than body searches. But, two, body scanners in prisons where many would be exposed to high levels of RF when using the machines. See the article below from several years ago about airport scanners linked to cancer. Three, in prisons the inmates must consent to a scan — but people at airports are given little choice. I’ve refused and nearly missed my plane because I was left waiting for a very long time for a “pat down”. And kids in schools —
Body scanners finally going in federal prisons
“Federal prisons will begin purchasing full-body scanners this summer, five years after Parliament approved their use, according to a Correctional Service report.
“In July 2022, body scanners were deployed at Edmonton Institution for Women and Bath Institution as part of a pilot program to further supplement current contraband detection methods,” the report noted.
“As a condition of this pilot, inmates must voluntarily consent to a body scan.”
Parliament passed Bill C-83 in 2019, amending the Corrections and Conditional Release Act to permit full-body scans of inmates and visitors at penitentiaries.
“It will take some time for body scanners to be installed in every institution,” then-Liberal MP Karen McCrimmon, parliamentary secretary for public safety, said at the time. “Correctional staff still need to be confident inmates are not smuggling drugs.”

3) Patricia Burke’s newsletter with many articles to read at your leisure. One, in particular, jumped out at me because, over the years, many people have asked me about various devices that are promised to either protect the user from EMF or to actually reduce the EMF by some bewildering method. I’ve warned people that they should get independent reviews from reliable sources — experts like Dr. Louis Slesin of Microwave News — before wasting money and, perhaps, falling for the promise of safety. The result could be that precautions that are recommended when using a wireless device are no longer being taken.

Your voice is important. Wireless radiation should not impact the public right of way. Please share your concerns and suggest inclusive Wi-Fi reduced (absent), barrier-free parks, beaches and trails where everyone including medically vulnerable people, children and pregnant women have digital detox options and opportunities to heal.
Wired Kiosks in Toronto can provide a multitude of valuable information and services.
Virtual consultations will be held on:
• Thursday, May 30, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, June 18, from 1 to 2 p.m.

ConnectTO program
Since its launch in May 2021, the City of Toronto’s ConnectTO program focused on improving the lives of Toronto residents through expanded access to the internet.
The City’s ConnectTO initiatives are guided by critical data on Toronto’s digital divide: where it exists, who it affects and how best to address it. For this reason, the program sponsors new research with several Toronto-area and beyond higher educational institution partners. The researchers and students of these institutions provide insight into the experiences of the digital divide, and this insight is used to ensure that resources are deployed for greatest impact to help bridge the divide.
To date, the City has installed free public Wi-Fi in more than 100 locations across the city including community parks and recreation centres, the St. Lawrence Market and select Toronto Community Housing Corporation locations, with more to come.
Quotes:
“I encourage everyone to participate in the upcoming consultations to help shape and expand the free public Wi-Fi strategy. The City of Toronto is committed to including the voice of the public in the work that it does. I look forward to listening to the input that we receive and bringing this into the continued development of the free public Wi-Fi program.”
