2024-05-24 US infrastructure vulnerable to cyberattack

1) Notes from Will Thomas regarding the battle against a cell tower on Hornby Island, including discussion points that might benefit others fighting cell tower encroachment. You can go to Will’s website (www.willthomasonline.net) and sign up to receive his very well-written articles. He agreed to have his email address included in this update item for those who might have important questions specific to these “notes”, but warns that he is very busy and will respond as he is able.

2) Warnings of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure such as water systems in the U.S. Many countries, such as USA and Canada, have allowed China to participate in designing, building and installing infrastructure, such as cell towers and 5G small cells. This could result in vulnerabilities, especially for those connected to the internet, such as our smeters.

Cyberattacks on water systems are increasing, EPA warns, urging utilities to take immediate action

“A cyber group linked to China and known as Volt Typhoon has compromised information technology of multiple critical infrastructure systems, including drinking water, in the United States and its territories, U.S. officials said. Cybersecurity experts believe the China-aligned group is positioning itself for potential cyberattacks in the event of armed conflict or rising geopolitical tensions….

The world’s cyberpowers are believed to have been infiltrating rivals’ critical infrastructure for years planting malware that could be triggered to disrupt basic services….

Kevin Morley, manager of federal relations with the American Water Works Association, said some water utilities have components that are connected to the internet — a common, but significant vulnerability. Overhauling those systems can be a significant and costly job. And without substantial federal funding, water systems struggle to find resources.”

3) A follow-up on the cyberattack on London Drugs, a major store in Western Canada. After refusing to pay the $25 million ransom, a huge amount of data was released on the dark web, much of it personal information about employees.

London Drugs right to not give in to cybercriminals’ demands: expert

“After the criminal group that targeted London Drugs released stolen employee data on Thursday, one cyber security expert believes the company was right not to give in to the criminals’ demands….

LockBit, the perpetrators claiming to be behind the ransom — first posted Tuesday — had been demanding that London Drugs pay $25 million in exchange for the data stolen during the April cyberattack that shuttered stores for days.”
