2) Debate about banning cell phones in classrooms is occurring in BC as it’s occurring in many places. It seems that people have become so reliant on total and constant communication that they’ve never had the opportunity to do what many of us did — get in touch with parents and friends after school. And if wireless devices aren’t available in class for all students, adjustments can be made. Or, again as we did, work manually.

Teacher representative says ban on cellphones in classrooms not needed

“Letting teachers decide how to deal with cellphone use in their own classrooms is a better option than the province-wide ban proposed by the leader of BC United, says the president of the Greater Victoria Teachers’ Association.

“We are not in favour of a ban across the board,” said Ilda Turcotte. “We firmly believe in teacher autonomy. There can be instances when it would be appropriate for students to use cellphones.”

After a new rule came into effect Dec. 31 banning cellphones from classrooms in Quebec, BC United Leader Kevin Falcon said his party would implement a province-wide ban to ensure a “consistent standard” for school use of cellphones. A similar ban was implemented in Ontario in 2019.”

3) Maybe some of the problems that I’m experiencing are due to tech changes that Katie Singer is confronting– perhaps changes that Shaw / Rogers hasn’t told me about. And, of course,…. Gmail. I’ve had to resort to sending updates via Gmail but many object to this. Until Shaw allows me to send emails to more than 5 people, I have no choice.

Trying to keep up with the tech

“Not two weeks into this new year, and already I’m struggling to keep up with the tech. First, I got warned that Chat GPT can copy and write in my voice—with no legal constraints. I did as instructed to prevent this. Given what I read in Mohar Chatterjee’s “Rise of the AI psychbots,” however, I can’t say that I feel protected.

Then, I got notified that Gmail and Yahoo! will send my bulk emails to spam—unless I sign up for an additional mailing list service. A friend suggested that I simply move my long-time mailing list to Substack, my platform for nearly one year.”
