1) Recently, I’ve received several emails from members who are being, or have been, harassed by Telus about their copper-based land line, one even being threatened with cessation of service if she didn’t let them cut her landline off and replace it with fibre optic cable. Telus is pushing their “PureFibre” [https://www.telus.com/en/bc/internet/fibre/new/faq] which is a great start — but which results in the “last mile”, the connection in the home, being wireless. She was told that she must have Wi-Fi even though she is sensitive.

Fiber optic cable carries data via light, not electricity as is the norm. All of our devices (TVs, computers, etc.) run on electricity so the optical signal must be converted. This is done via an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). Fiber is so much better than Wi-Fi in many ways: it’s much faster, more secure, more efficient, and it doesn’t irradiate.
But I’ve shared my concerns about the Dirty Electricity caused by these terminals even if the Wi-Fi is disabled. According to Telus a couple of years ago, they offer several types of ONT, some of which can have the Wi-Fi completely disabled. In addition to the Dirty Electricity, for which I’ve been unable to find filters, I’ve shared concerns about loss of copper-based landlines. With fiber optic cable, phones will rely on internet and electricity. During outages, the ONTs will have power from short-term batteries but when the batteries die or if the internet is down, there will be no phone service, not even 911. A member in Ottawa told me that recently, during a power outage, there was no connection, even his home security system was dead, which was a major concern for him.
When Telus contacts you about having fibre optic cable replace your land line, please try to get as much information about the ONTs and the 911 situation as you can. I’d really appreciate any information you can get. Please send to:
