2023-12-08 Warning from Apple re. interference with medical devices

1) Shelley Wright B.Ed. and Brian Durkin P.Eng. will talk about the phase-out of analog phone lines, the phase-in of digital Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), as well as safe alternatives to wireless devices on the market and how to wire your devices.

2) How can anything that connects directly to the brain, in any fashion, be considered “non-invasive”? There may be therapeutic benefits, e.g enabling a paralyzed person to use a computer, but how else could this technology be used?

The First Non Invasive BCI for Consumers (Real NerveGear)                (BCI= Brain Computer Interface)

“A new type of Brain Computer Interface finally make a real NerveGear with full dive Virtual Reality a possibility. Ultrasound can completely non invasively write to the brain and thus create sensations in the brain without a direct implant….

Now, a new study is a proof-of-concept that fUS technology can be the basis for an “online” BMI—one that reads brain activity, deciphers its meaning with decoders programmed with machine learning, and consequently controls a computer that can accurately predict movement with very minimal delay time.”

3) Warning from Apple that I believe applies to all wireless devices.

About potential interference with medical devices
Apple Support

Most consumer electronic devices, including laptops, tablets, smartphones, wearables, and audio devices, contain magnets and generate electromagnetic fields that might interfere with medical devices. For example, implanted pacemakers and defibrillators might contain sensors that respond to magnets and radios when in close contact.

Most medical device manufacturers recommend keeping a source of potential interference a safe distance away from your medical device (at least 6 inches / 15 cm apart or at least 12 inches / 30 cm apart when using a wireless charger). Consult your physician and medical device manufacturer for specific guidelines. Manufacturers often provide recommendations on the safe use of their devices around wireless or magnetic products to prevent possible interference.

If you suspect that an Apple device is interfering with your medical device, stop using it and consult your physician and your medical device manufacturer.

Looking at an Apple iPhone manual at random I found these statements which seem to be contradictory. If the FCC and ISED Compliance says that this phone cannot cause harmful interference, then why is it allowed to possibly cause such interference, which is admitted — with hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other medical devices. I expect that the same warnings would be found in all user manuals.

iPhone is hearing aid compatible as determined by ANSI C63.19-2011. This standard has two ratings: M (for reduced radio-frequency interference to enable acoustic coupling) and T (for inductive coupling with hearing aids operating in telecoil mode) on a scale from 1-4, where 4 is most compatible. This iPhone is rated M3/T4. Note: the 2019 ANSI C63.19 standard does not use this rating system nor do any test standards exist for any wireless technologies that transmit above 6 GHz. Therefore, 5G NR mmWave frequency bands cannot be tested….

Medical Device Interference iPhone contains magnets as well as components and/or radios that may interfere with medical devices. See “Important safety information” in the iPhone User Guide.

FCC and ISED Canada Compliance This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules and ISED Canada licence-exempt RSS standard(s). Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.”
