Locating ourselves in a bioregion—locating our watershed To move toward living within our ecological means
“While I read daily about democracy collapsing and new mining operations, I wonder if reducing dependence on international supply chains is even possible Could any community limit its new infrastructure and tools (substations, telecom access networks, data centers, computers and vehicles) to those made only from materials found within a 500-mile radius? Would any community commit to sustaining itself by keeping what they have in good repair?”

2) I have not read the report but the press release says that a future auction will include mmWave frequencies. The government will make many millions off the sale of new frequencies, which is a major conflict of interest.
Why would ISED or any part of the government want to eliminate wireless when telecoms pay so much for the spectrum that we, the public, own? How can the government claim that wireless will address climate change in any way when it uses so much more energy than wired, while destroying the environment in so many ways?
News release:
New Spectrum Outlook outlines plan to make spectrum available for more affordable wireless services, faster rollout of 5G and improved rural connectivity
August 11, 2023 – Ottawa, Ontario
“Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the release of Spectrum Outlook 2023 to 2027, outlining the government’s plans to use spectrum to deliver affordable and high-quality telecom services, support faster deployment of 5G, improve rural connectivity, promote the use of wireless technologies that will help address climate change, and advance reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. The Spectrum Outlook also lays out the government’s spectrum release plans for the coming years, ensuring that enough spectrum is available for the services Canadians depend on.”
Quick facts
When planning spectrum releases and consultations, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada considers the demand for various wireless services, international spectrum allocations, the development of telecom equipment ecosystems, and standards that allow Canadians to access the latest technologies.
The 3800 MHz auction, scheduled to begin on October 24, 2023, will be the third major auction to make spectrum available for 5G, following the 600 MHz auction in 2019 and the 3500 MHz auction in 2021.
The government will be making more 5G spectrum available in the future, including through non-competitive local licensing and an upcoming auction for millimetre wave spectrum.

Spectrum Outlook 2023-2027
“The 2023 Outlook outlines ISED’s spectrum plans to support wireless telecommunications services in Canada, with a focus on commercial mobile services, satellite services, backhaul applications and licence-exempt applications. When planning these releases and consultations, ISED considers the demand for various wireless services, international spectrum allocations, the development of equipment ecosystems and standards that would allow Canadians to access the latest technologies and leverage economies of scale.”

If the writer finds out anything about this “new copper wire service” Telus says it’s providing, I will let you know. Just to clarify, Telus told me a year or so ago that they do have a variety of modems to convert the optical signal to electrical, and several of them can be hard wired with the Wi-Fi disabled. Full information is available in this update: https://stopsmartmetersbc.com/2022-04-12-cutting-of-copperlines-to-support-5g-networks/

Subject: Cut Service – Telus
I have not had our copper landline service cut, but this past March, I saw on my phone bill that my long distance charges for March were separated in a very peculiar manner, with calls on March 11, 13 and 15th separated out from calls made earlier and later in March. I immediately called Telus, and was told that those specific days were when I was put on a “new copper wire service”, and that this was the only way Telus could figure out how to keep us continuing with a copper wire phone line.
I got suspicious at what might have been done to our house to achieve this, and asked her, the Telus employee, “What has Telus done to the phone box on the outside of our garage?”, suspecting that without my permission Telus had come and installed a wireless receiver in that box. She assured me that these changes were at the Telus office only, and that no changes were made at our home. She again reiterated that they had to cancel our ‘old copper wire service’ and put us on a ‘new copper wire service’.
Both then and now I think that this so called change was VERY fishy, but since my phone service continues in perfect working order, I don’t know what else I could do other than cancelling Telus for my phone and internet. I am not clear on what else I want to change to, although I did check into different VoIP providers, but want something that will work without electricity.
I believe that perhaps Telus might have done this ‘change’ to our phone service because I told the last in a long string of young Telus employees that have come to our front door to convince us to switch to fiber optic, that I knew (from reading your updates) that their fiber optics came only as far as a box on the street, and that then (because our house wasn’t wired for fiber optics when it was built) the signal had to be beamed to a wireless receiver and router located within our house. I said this beam was radio wave frequency and, like 5G, is very dangerous to our health, and I refuse to have a phone using this technology. I also said I knew that 5G was weapons grade technology, used in warfare to do great harm to an enemy, and did this young man know this? He said he did, and that he would make a special note on our file, and that nobody else would come to our house and bother us again! Who knows if this truly will be the last of Telus’ effort to change our phone from copper wire, but I am grateful for the continued service.
