2023-07-14 – Problems with ITRON smeters in Michigan

1)  Rogers wants to put its small/microcells on other telecoms’ poles but is being refused. I don’t know if this means Rogers’ as well as Telus’s or Bell’s transmitters could be on the same pole, or if Rogers would use poles not holding other microcells. I suspect that there could be more than one cell transmitter on a pole outside our homes.

Rogers asks CRTC for expedited wireless access to telco poles, claiming it’s being stonewalled

“Rogers is accusing Bell and Telus of delaying its requests to attach wireless equipment on their poles and is asking the CRTC to make an interim order granting those requests on an expedited basis….

“The decisions of Bell and Telus to refuse small cell access to their poles has had, and will continue to have, a profound effect on the deployment of Rogers’ broadband network,” Rogers added. “Small cells are a key enabler of 5G wireless technology. Poles are ideal supporting structures for small cells. While Bell and Telus have deployed their own small cells on their poles, they have blocked competing wireless providers like Rogers from doing so.””

2)  Lots of problems with ITRON smeters are being investigated in Michigan. There have been malfunctioning smeters, contaminated batteries, and difficulties transitioning from 3G to 4G. Why didn’t ITRON anticipate these problems before customers were inconvenienced and potentially over-billed? Another problem not mentioned here — why didn’t ITRON allow independent professional Electrical Engineers inspect their smeters for safety so we don’t have to worry about fires?

MPSC investigates Consumers Energy over malfunctioning meters, estimated billing, delays in new electric and gas service

  •  An explanation of why, in Case No. U-20639, Consumers did not disclose the number of malfunctioning meters or inform the MPSC that customers would be receiving estimated meter readings until new meters were installed.
  • Data on how many 3G and 4G meters have been affected by contaminated batteries in each year in 2020 through 2023, and on how many 3G and 4G meters have been affected by other issues that caused them not to display readings.
