1) Cece Doucette has shared a new ordinance that Ithaca (New York, I believe) has written to gain more local control over cell tower siting.
In Canada, the ISED’s policy is to recognize local community Antenna Siting Protocols and to encourage telecoms to work within them as much as possible. Unfortunately, ISED still has the final say, but stating upfront and getting community Council support for concerns and desires provides a voice that is otherwise missing. Without having an Antenna Siting Protocol, the community must live with ISED’s policy CPC 2-0-03.
Ithaca’s new ordinance provides a great example of what an Antenna Siting Protocol could be.
New code provisions for the Town of Ithaca:
“Our battle against wireless radiation in the Town of Ithaca has finally come to a conclusion after almost three years (not to be confused with our successful effort with the City of Ithaca, which concluded in late 2021). Despite willful ignorance from the national media around this issue and an initially-uneducated Town Board, we were successful in convincing the Board to enact new codes that should limit the number of new cell antennas in Ithaca and maintain maximum local control over such impactful decisions.”
