2022-01-05 Battle between safe aviation and 5G continues

1) The FCC and FAA are still debating how to (or even if it is necessary to) eliminate interference to airplane equipment by certain 5G frequency bands. The truth is that 5G is not going well generally so why is the US government willing to put lives at risk by allowing strong 5G signals near airports? The new 2 week delay, and the possible compromise to reduce power at 50 major airports, may not resolve this dispute. What about planes at other airports, and the people flying on them?

AT&T, Verizon reject U.S. request to delay 5G wireless plans (Sunday)

Verizon and AT&T have rejected a request by the U.S. government to delay the rollout of next-generation wireless technology.

A joint letter Sunday from the telecommunications giants to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Steve Dickson, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration, sought to dismiss concerns brought by U.S. airlines that a new 5G wireless service could harm aviation.

Airlines had asked the Federal Communications Commission to delay this week’s scheduled 5G rollout, saying the service, set to launch Wednesday, could interfere with electronics that pilots rely on. Airlines for America, a trade group for large U.S. passenger and cargo carriers, said in an emergency filing that the FCC has failed to adequately consider the harm that 5G service could do to the industry. The group wants more time for the FCC and the FAA, which regulates airlines, to resolve issues around aviation safety. Those are related to a type of 5G service that relies on chunks of radio spectrum called C-Band, which wireless carriers spent billions of dollars to buy up last year.”

Biden says deal with telecoms avoids flight disruptions  (Wednesday)

“Telecom giants AT&T and Verizon have agreed to postpone the launch of a new slice of 5G wireless service after airlines and aviation groups complained that the networks can interfere with systems on board planes.
The two-week postponement will give the FAA and the companies time to implement the agreement.

AT&T and Verizon will be allowed to launch C-Band service this month under already-granted FCC licenses. The airlines have until Friday to give the companies a list of up to 50 airports where they believe the power of C-Band service should be reduced through July 5.

2) A recent study done by Indian scientists confirm what many have been saying for a long time. EMF pollution is contributing to the decline in the pollinator population.

Cell phones play key role in decline of bees

“An experiment conducted in the southern state of Kerala found that a sudden fall in the bee population was caused by towers installed across the state by cellphone companies to increase their network…

In their report on bee populations in India, scientists Ved Prakash Sharma and Neelima Kumar noticed that an increase in the usage of electronic devices had led to electropollution of the environment. “Honeybee behavior and biology had been affected by electrosmog since these insects have magnetite in their bodies which helps them in navigation”, they said.

According to Dr. Sainuddin Pattazhy, who conducted the study on bees “If towers and mobile phones further increase, honey bees might be wiped out in 10 years.”

3) Surprisingly, many people are still fighting to keep their analog meters. I have no idea how many but I am receiving emails quite regularly asking for ideas. Below is a stream of emails back and forth with BC Hydro, in which misinformation is given and the fact that there was no oversight by BCUC is highlighted. I believe we need to keep fighting against these devices, especially since FortisBC has an application before the BCUC for a “smart” gas meter. These emails, perhaps, can help some who are still fighting hard to keep smeters off their homes.

RE: Your email to us of Sep 28, 2021

Date: Dec. 14, 2021

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Bolin,

Thank you for your October 12, 2021 email as well as your follow up email to me and MLA Malcolmson on November 2, 2021. I appreciate the opportunity to answer your questions regarding electromagnetic radio frequency (RF) energy.

BC Hydro does not assess or regulate the general public’s exposure to RF energy. It is Health Canada’s responsibility to set guidelines for the safe use of technology, and the limit for exposure is referenced in Safety Code 6.

Our radio-on smart meters are radio transmission/radio apparatus subject to federal jurisdiction in Canada under the Telecommunications Act and regulated by Industry Canada. One of the requirements is that radio be operated in a manner that complies with Health Canada’s Limits of Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields in the Frequency Range from 3 kHz to 300 GHz, Safety Code 6, 2015.

BC Hydro also complies with other safety and operating standards that help ensure that Smart Meters operate safely and properly.

As explained in our response dated June 25, 2021, in 2014, BC Hydro retained Planetworks Consulting, a North Vancouver Engineering firm, to conduct independent testing of smart meters and radio-off meters. The test was conducted in an RF isolation room to remove the RF signal sources, which are found in nearly all open environments, from other devices.   (as an aside, Planetworks is not independent. It consults for telecoms, helping to find new sites for cell towers and supporting their applications to Municipal Councils, etc.  Sharon)

The test determined that the average RF of a smart meter was approximately 0.59% of the RF limit set out by Health Canada and the radio-off meter registered so low it was difficult to distinguish its RF from other background noise.   (another note:  This is an average of signals over a long period of time.  The signals are very short in duration but strong in power density. Averaging takes into consideration the periods between signals when there it is quiet. It is the peak that is harmful, and the average misleads terribly. Sharon)

Since BC Hydro does not measure RF energy, we cannot comment on the variability of exposure limits for individual customers.

I hope this information helps to alleviate the concerns you have about our radio-off meters. Please be assured that we are committed to providing safe, reliable and accurate meters for our customers.

Mr. O’Riley, MLA Malcolmson:

The following email was sent to Mr. O’Riley and to Sheila Malcolmson (att. Darcy Olsen) on October 12 as a result of MLA Malcolmson’s note asking for two final questions to close out our complaint about the demanded installation of a smart meter on our home which included the threat of discontinuing all electric service to us if we did not imminently comply with BC Hydro’s meter demands.

To date we have had no responses to either of these questions from either party behind that threat and the subsequent action taken.

If the present inquiry filed with our provincial representative is to be closed, we request that at least these two final questions be answered.

Thanking you in advance for your consideration in this matter,

We remain,

Ron and Inge Bolin

Please note how O’Riley is repeating the industry’s lines. For example: in the second paragraph of the Sept. 28 email, O’Riley says that there are thousands of published studies showing no harmful effects to exposure below Safety Code 6 limits.  He should be asked to provide examples of these studies which, of course, are industry funded and produced by “scientists” who have been bought and paid for by the telecoms.
