2020-01-31 Next generation smeters for 5G

1) An electronics article under the heading of “sensors” reports that smeters are being developed to work with the 5G grid, just as we had been expecting. We must find out what BC Hydro and FortisBC are planning with regard to this. These smeters will be enhanced to better able communicate with everything “smart” in your home, gathering personal data to which they have no right. The smeters are the key to the 5G grid — and we must take steps now to prevent this invasion.

Verizon, Honeywell seeking to expedite smart meter use

“Verizon has teamed up with Honeywell to help utilities speed up and simplify the deployment of new communication-enabled, intelligent sensors and controls for the smart electric grid.

By integrating Verizon’s Managed Connectivity LTE solutions into Honeywell’s next-generation smart meters and other electric, gas, and water solutions, the two companies expect to drive energy savings by more quickly deploying smart electric grid technologies. ..

The platform will include features important to utilities, including strong device identity and security, dynamic network authorization and access, remote device monitoring and management, modem firmware and application upgrades, real-time device diagnostics, and simplified supply-chain and data access….

The open secure edge computing and networking platform enables Honeywell to incorporate sophisticated technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning into its meters. The two companies are also working to explore how 5G can transform the utility industry through higher bandwidth, faster speeds and low latency, enabling advanced industrial automation and control solutions along with real-time analytics.”

2) Another investment pitch for products that claim to expand the capability of 5G by working around/over the flaws of current technology. This is an interesting article that speaks to major flaws that are hindering the expansion of the grid, with a YouTube that shows how even glass can stop a milliwave from reaching a 5G cell phone. Of course, he is not considering the phase array antennae that can makes the milliwave signals capable of penetrating better and going farther because he’s trying to sell something — micro satellites.

A tech snag has brought America’s 5G rollout to a screeching halt.
But one company has come up with a novel solution…

“Yet the high 5G speeds we’ve been promised are nothing more than a fantasy. Unless millions of Americans are willing to stay outside…

In close proximity to a 5G antenna like this… we’re not going to see ANY 5G revolution at all…

This firm’s technology can transmit and extend short-range 5G signals…

Then blanket huge areas with those extended signals for wide coverage and seamless connectivity…

Using micro satellites that hover above Earth…”

3) A member just provided info about an ongoing strike by workers who, I was told, install(ed) smeters for BC Hydro and fiber optic cable/microcells for Telus, trying to organize for better, safer working conditions. Apparently, these corporations are pushing to have these experienced, qualified workers replaced by unqualified, untrained/poorly trained workers, similar to Corix. If BC Hydro is allowed to replace all the current smeters with the next generation, it is likely that they will use these inexperienced, cheap workers again, causing more problems like fires, damaged appliances, etc.

IBEW 213 Members at Ledcor LTS Strike

“Telecommunications is a predominately nonunion industry. The reasons LTS workers decided to organize into a union are they were experiencing regular cuts in pay, extended work hours, required unpaid work, unjust termination, and general poor working conditions. These workers chose to bargain collectively with their employer, which is their right….

Then, on September 25, Ledcor broke the law and their own word when they laid off en-mass 31 IBEW 213 members.”

4) Last May, Cece Doucette gave an excellent presentation to a Municipal Council. It is in full as a YouTube. As well, she has presented a summary in written form with references. These can provide a great template for presentations to other Councils [http://www.civicinfo.bc.ca/people].

5) In New Brunswick, the utility company is claiming huge losses due to older analog meters not being accurate, making it sound as if all older analogs are inaccurate. But that is why Measurement Canada requires that meters of all types be certified regularly and often for older meters. Of course, some older meters that were not themselves examined could be running slow while some are running fast.

My cynical self wonders if this is merely a way to justify the utility company’s push for smeters while preparing customers for higher bills once they’ve been smetered.

Old meters giving away free electricity to thousands of NB households

“Home and business owners with old power meters in New Brunswick have been getting the equivalent of up ten days worth of electricity a year or more for free, a multi million dollar perk that will end quickly if the energy and utilities board (EUB) approves the adoption of smart meters….

The report made the point analog meters can also run fast but called that “less common” meaning that if the EUB approves smart meters, tens of thousands of customers who lose an old meter to a new accurate model will experience higher bills.”
